The property is next to The Lighthouse, a cannabis dispensary co-owned by Joseph Rubin that recently opened a second location in Palm Springs. The sprawling resort-style Hotel Indigo project has been billed as a "modern luxury oasis" and is on a swath of land along Avenue 48 off Interstate 10 along the municipal border between Coachella and Indio. Stuart Rubin's attorney, Laurence Berman, called the complaint "baseless." A case management conference and hearings in the case are scheduled for late April. The complaint also alleges Stuart Rubin was using funds to support his "lifestyle." Stiffelman says that while the project cost was ballooning, Stuart Rubin was spending six figures on his daughter’s wedding and leasing a Bentley Betnagya, a $165,000 vehicle. “Relying on the ruse of personal friendship and touting his own purported financial wealth, Rubin induced Stiffelman to invest his time, money, reputation, and personal guaranties in the development of a hotel that Rubin and his son Joseph subsequently sabotaged by their incompetence and fraud,” the lawsuit, which was filed in October, says. His suit says the still-incomplete project has blown through two separate $25 million budgets. Once close friends who were neighbors on the same street in Beverly Hills, Stiffelman alleges Stuart Rubin cajoled him to dump increasing amounts of money into Hotel Indigo and to guarantee debts for the project even though it was failing to come together. Gary Stiffelman, who is one of the initial investors in the Hotel Indigo, filed a 25-page lawsuit in Superior Court in Los Angeles County bringing multiple claims against Stuart Rubin, his son Joseph Rubin, the family’s trust, and the hotel’s business entity, Glenroy Coachella Holdings LLC.
